2.You can use up to 10% of a copyrighted work.

3.It is prohibited to use multiple parts of the same work with the intention of copying a lot or most of the work.

4.Yes you can charge a fee, but it should only cover the cost of the institution.

5. Teachers can use copyrighted work for the purpose of teaching and testing,

6.They can not make a large print book without permission from the works owner.

7.Yes, but it has to be for educational purposes.

17. Furlong, J (2016) Getting around copyright: An experts guide at stealing online products.
      Miramichi: Canadian Library Association $18.99.

Journal #7 Digital Access

1.What I found most surprising is that these small rural towns have such a fast internet speed. I always imagined that large cities had an overall faster speed.

2.No information in particular was difficult to find.

3.I believe that everyone should have fast internet, it's easier said then done, however.

4.I've never been scared of my information being on the internet, mostly because I share the absolute bare minimum, I usually fake all my information on websites.

5.Never, nothing that I post would effect me in such a way.

6.The biggest issue is that young people put all their information on the internet, where people can easily find and research you.

Assignment #2: Privacy Please

  1. Our medical records should be all digitally stored online for all medical professionals to access within the hospital when needed.
It would be a lot easier to access the files if they were stored digitally, instead of searching through files and files you could just search up and look at a file. It would cut down time.
  1. Voting should be done 100% online for both provincial and federal elections starting in 2017.
It depends on what this entails. If this means voting machines, then i'm all for it. If it means that you can vote from your home, not so much. I believe that you should have to go to a community centre and be ID'd before being able to vote.

  1. School report cards and daily attendance should be digital and passwords should be issued for parents to log in and check results.
I agree, while parent teacher would probably be abolished, parents would be able to see how their kids are doing in school in seconds.

  1. Schools in 2020 should be closed and teachers and students should begin learning in virtual classrooms using digital technology at home.
Not at all, digital courses exist now but a fully fledged digital education? No way. If school was completely virtual they would not learn vital social skills that they get talking to their peers face to face.

Assignment #1 Fast Internet Speeds in Small Towns.

1.These small rural towns have extremely fast internets speeds, which is around 1 gigabyte per second.

2.These small towns are getting faster internet because they are setting it up themselves, instead of big companies such as Bell.

3.They are fortunate because the local internet company wants to provide the locals the best possible technology.

4.They built their own fibre op because many people were threatening to leave the town due to it. They built it using government grants and loans.

5.Stratford became known as an IT hub, that has a 400 million dollar data centre set up.

6.Bell is planning to sent up 1.1 million homes in Toronto with Fibre Op, they already have set up a million people in Northern Ontario and Atlantic Canada.

7.More and more people are leaving rural areas for cities, internet is one reason of this.

8.The government has supplied 305 million dollars to insure that every household gets at least 5 megabytes per second.

Journal #6: Digital Buisness

1.What I found most surprising is that Google Wallet and Apple Pay exist, I haven't heard of either prior to this.

2.I found the information about how PayPal makes their money hard to find.

3.The only thing i've bought online were digital goods. My sister however regularly bought clothing online.

4.I've never sold anything online.

5.

5. If you have online subscriptions that renew every year make reminders and notes of the renewal dates so you don't get charged large fees without knowing they are coming.

This one happened to me in particular quite a lot. It sucks having something you don't use anymore suck $60 out of your account.

3. When buying online sometimes prices seem too good to be true so be careful of LARGE SHIPPING COSTS designed by the seller to get the real price through trickery.
This could potentially cost you a lot of money.

The biggest issue when it comes to young people buying good online is that they possibly don't know how it works. They could possibly get renewals that rack up a lot of money by accident.

Assignment #2: PayPal

1.PayPal is a free, secure method of payment that you can use on the millions of websites. It has buyer protection so you can shop fearlessly.

2.PayPal does not reveal your name or your address or your credit card information.

3.Paypal makes money by charging the seller of the product around 30 cents. They also take the money of their users and generate interest from it.

4.If you buy a product from across the world and it does not arrive PayPal will give you a refund. If the seller can not supply proof of delivery they give you a refund.

5.I would allow Paypal. It has 100 million users and is an extremely easy way to pay.

6.Google Wallet is still growing, so my opinion may change. But right now, I prefer Paypal. Google Wallet is still in development and it's user base shows it, there are a lot more users on Paypal. Not only that, but you are unable to send 10,000 in more then a 5 day period, making large scale purchases difficult.

Assignment #1: Digital Shopping Carts?

1.The two biggest reasons that people still shop at stores are:

1:You don't have to wait 4 days for the product to arrive.

2:You can easily return the product if there is a defect with it.

2.The two biggest reasons why people shop in stores are.

1:You don't have to be social and actually go anywhere, you just click a button.

2:The product is delivered straight to your door.

3.I would rather shop in a store. Instead of waiting half a week you can get your product from a short drive.

4.I believe that online shopping will be the main method of shopping due to how fast it's upgrading. Amazon started using drones to deliver products cutting the time it takes to deliver it to your house by a large margin.

5.I think this is a smart business plan. Not many people send letters so there is a lot more opportunities transporting bought products.

6.They should have a support page and a LOT of people checking it.

Journal #5 Digital Wellness

1.What I found most surprising is how far a car goes in meters. Seeing distance as a different unit really shows how dangerous distracted driving truly is.

2.I think that the five pledges were the hardest, only because I was having trouble thinking them up.

3.I think the biggest issue for young people about Digital Wellness is that they use it way too much. Instead of exercising they just sit down at their computer all day.

Assignment #2 (The Pledge)

1 and 2.There are products to make using technology slightly more healthy, but I outright believe that we should be using digital products less for more productive activities. I'm not saying that you should be exercising every hour, but you should not be on your computer for five hours straight, at least stretch if you are going to.

Activity #2: Pledges

1.I pledge to not use technology past 9 to make sure that I go to sleep early.
2.I pledge that I will stretch after being on a computer for a long period of time.
3.I pledge to not use my computer for more then 2 hours at a time.
4.I pledge to be more physically active.
5.I pledge that I will limit my phone usage as much as possible.

Assignment 1 (One Mississippi)

1.Seeing distance in meters really shows just how dangerous it is to be distracted when driving. You go 31.9m/s when going 115km/h. Just looking down at your phone or glancing to the side is enough time to launch you off the road.

2.The advertisement is done really well. It shows the spectators that looking at your phone for even a second could result in a crash. It may not work merely because they're in a movie cinema. It's likely that most people would disregard it since the situation is fake.

3.I'm not sure if this would be possible in any way what so ever, but the invention would be an electronic device that automatically shuts off all cell phones in the vehicle. Passengers are likely to be frustrated but that's the cost for safety.

4.I don't necessarily care about people speeding, mostly because I trust that if they are going that speed they can handle it, but I will call out them being on their phone.

Journal 4 (Netiquette)

1 and 2.What I find most surprising is the Terms of Service. Companies know that people aren't going to read their 50 pages of nonsense before they use their product, and they use this to their advantage.  Companies like Sony put it in their ToS that you are unable to sue them once you accept it. One company actually stated that they would give
$1000 to anyone who seen and called a phone number in their ToS, just to prove that no one reads them. People should definitely read the ToS as it may legally bind them into a deal they had no idea existed.

3. I would give myself a 5/10. I'm pretty neutral online, while I do insult some people I also help quite a few. I'd like to think that those balance themselves out.

4. If I took anything out of this unit it is to read or at least google Terms of Services before accepting them.

5. I think the biggest issue for young people are the comments they make. Since they're anonymous they think they're invincible leading out to quite a lot of insults being thrown.

Online Discussion Boards (Assignment #3)

1.I would say that most of these guidelines are similar to talking face to face, besides the one like no sarcastic tone and all caps, as they would not take effect in a real discussion.

2. 1:Check the FAQ or Google before asking, It's pretty annoying when someone asks you a question that has been already answered many times.

2:Don't badmouth others, for obvious reasons.

3:Be brief, no one wants to read 10 paragraphs to figure out what you're trying to say.

4:Don't write anything that sounds angry or sarcastic, no one can hear your tone, they can't tell if you're being serious or not.

3. I make comments online all the time, and it really depends. If someone asks me a question I tend to be helpful. Besides that i'm relatively malicious.

4.Not really, I don't imagine that they would be much material on that subject, even if there was, it's not very captivating.

NETiquette Do As I Say (Assignment #2)

1.The fine and jail time for getting caught downloading a pirated file is huge they go up to 250,000 and five years of jail time respectively. I would hate to be struck with either.

2.If you pirate a movie, game or film, you are directly taking money out of the hands of the producers, which is likely to cause them to drop making movies entirely.

3.Pirating a film is likely to reduce the quality of it. Since it's a straight file that's not being streamed, the person that pirated it is likely to just take a low quality version of the movie so that it takes less space.

4.Bullying people online could potentially lead to them committing suicide.

5.People put a lot of effort into creating things and it would be a shame to take it without giving them a dime.

Online Standards of Service Use (Assignment #1)

1. Snapchat is popular for being able to send pictures or videos that delete themselves after being viewed, But an update to the Snapchat Terms of Service indicates that Snapchat has the rights to reproduce, modify and republish your photos and save those photos to Snapchat’s servers, specifically in relation to the ‘Live Story’ feature.

Assignment: Digital Rights and Responsibilities

Journal Entry #3 Digital Rights and Responsibilities

1.What I find most surprising about Digital Rights and Responsibilities is the shear about of them. Too be completely honest I myself don't follow the majority of them.

2.People do not act responsibly online, mainly because you can make yourself anonymous. You can insult people without them knowing it's you.

3.I would say the one about Piracy is most important. The act of Piracy takes money out of producers hands since consumers can get their products for free.

4.I think that the biggest issue relating to young children is the lack of supervision they're given. The internet gives them access to a lot of illicit things.

Thursday, 24 November 2016

Assignment Two (Acronyms Attack)

1:SMH-Shake My Head
TBH-To Be Honest
B8-Bait

2.There are a lot of situations where you should not use Acronyms. An example is in a formal emails to an employer, or at a serious place such as a funeral. If you're writing a resume or to someone who might not know said acronym (You're grandparents)

Communication Compass (Assignment One)

1. Electronic transmission of information that has been encoded digitally (as for storage and processing by computers)

2. The biggest advantage of digital communication is being able to talk to your friends from practically anywhere. You get an instant response. No paper is used for long distance messages. And are able to talk to emergency services no matter where you're located. These do have downsides of course. People get addicted and may stay on their phones. They result in more car crashes due to people talk while driving and they are another bill to pay.

3.Texting is one of the most popular forms of communication, you can quickly type out a short message to send to friends or family. Phone calls are for longer, more complex conversations. Emails, while not as popular as the other two, are good for sending over files or for more formal conversations.

4.The biggest one are emails, People are much more likely to just call or text then send a long and detailed email. Besides that, some apps like Twitter or Vine and the like may end up being phased out. In fact, Vine is currently in the process of shutting down.

5. First and foremost, Driving is obvious, it risks the life of you and everyone around you. A funeral, marriage or library are obvious going to be regarded as disrespectful. And somewhere like a court may end up with you in prison.

6. Websites like Omegle that match you up with a random stranger and the two of you talk through webcam and microphone, this should be self explanatory. Besides that, social media. People have a tendency to put A LITTLE TOO MUCH information on accounts visible to all.

7.While I think that children should be introduced to computer and the internet at a relatively young age, the amount of time it's used should be monitored. Today there are a lot of people that are addicted to technology and I presume that in the next generation, the power going out would be like cutting off their oxygen supply.

8.Well if someone decided to avoid Social media, they should delete their account, if it's something like facebook they can reactivate it at any time. If they are dead then I think their account should be turned into something of a memorial.

Journal One:Digital Security

1.The thing I found most surprising when it comes to Digital Security and passwords is that people actually use the passwords on the list. You would think that people could think of things more complex then "12345" or "Password"

2.The thing I found most confusing or difficult was actually the math section, I spent 5 minutes on it only to find out that I forgot that you have to square them.

3.I'd say that my passwords are relatively secure. On that password, checker, thing my main one got 9 months. I don't think that an actual person would guess it though.

4. I think that the most simple and important thing to remember is to never give your passwords out. It's just asking for people to log on it.

Wednesday, 23 November 2016

Digital Security (Assignment One)

1. All the passwords are easy to guess, things such as 12345 and 123456789 are the first things that come to mind to me, when trying to think of a password. Some things like qwerty are a little harder because most people don't know the meaning of the letters.

2. I have not used any of these in particular, but I have used some pretty similar things. I however, only use them on accounts that I genuinely don't care about, such as websites where I expect to only log in once anyway.

3. I imagine that adults are more likely to do things such as this. This is a stereotype but I'm guessing that most seniors don't know the severity of having an easy to guess password. The easiest way to help is to just inform them.

4. A pets name
    A family members name
Both of these make it really easy for anyone who knows you to get into your accounts

And fruit (Apple for example)

5.A password doesn't need to be long, to be strong. But I think that a password should be at least 6 characters long.

Hercules Code

1.The password provided is considered the best, and says that it would take 621 centuries to crack.

2.My usual passwords:9 months
   2 days
3.I couldn't think of anything so I just wrote down the model of my family's truck. It works.

Toon Town Photo Bomb

I took a scene from Roadrunner, It was simply the first cartoon that came to mind.

I put in Donald Trump, and a bootleg variant of his notorious wall behind. It just fit in.

You can see in this picture that my work would not even be near the level required to work in the films industry, although it might be quite an amusing

Monster Mash

I picked the photo that I did merely because it seemed like it would be the easiest picture to make a monster that fits in.

Nothing really inspired me, although I obviously did take a lot of hints from the example on the assignment page. I mostly made it out of circles.

The assignment wasn't that hard in general, i'd say that the hardest part for me was learning the tools I used to make it. The easiest part was the eye of the monster.

Be True to Your School

The Design is effective as it shows off our two main logos.

The most challenging part for me was removing the white that surrounded the logos, it wasn't that big of an issue for the eagle but it was for the circle, as you can clearly see. The easiest part was putting the eagle logo in general. I just had to change it's size.

I'm not really interested in digital art and design, i'm not exactly good at it and while kind of fun, I assume that it would be quite boring after a couple images.

It depends, as I said above I really am not a fan of editing photos, it really depends on the pay.

Before the War

I selected the photo that I did as it seemed easier in general. While there was more to do it would be easier to cover up the gashes in the photo.

The most challenging part of the photo for me was the guys head, as you can obviously see in the picture, I failed horribly at it, the easiest part was probably either the gate door or the tall grass near the building.

I've never retouched a photo before. And I would not want to do this as a job, merely because it's so time consuming for a most likely meagre paying job.

Freak of Nature

I selected the crow for the stupid expression on it's face, and the bear as a body as it was the best match I could find for the crows colour.

Overall the project was really easy for me, as there is only two components. The hardest part was learning how to use the program in general.

It looks relatively realistic, well, as realistic as a photoshopped animal can look.

I've never used a photo editor before

Automobile Timeline

Automobile Timeline

I think that out of the 6 technologies, I think that the flying cars is the least likely to succeed, at least in my lifetime. It's just such a large undertaking, not only would they be so expensive that only the richest of the rich could own them, the government would most like have to change laws and build more landing pads or runways for them, if they somehow got widely used.

I think the technology that would have the largest impact would be the self driving cars. It's something that would result in lower car crashes and errors on the drivers part. It would enable people to do work or eat while driving, which is useful if they're short on time.

Self-Driving cars are the closest to reality, with Google performing and succeeding with numerous tests. Nissan has stated that by 2020 they will have a functioning car that can drive by itself.

The Driver Workload Estimator would in theory be able to detect if the drivers heart rate, how sweaty their hands are and how erratic their breathing is. With this they're able to figure out when the driver is under stress. If the driver is under stress the car will stop phone calls, lower the cars stereo and other things to make sure that the driver can keep their concentration.

The largest and most apparent benefit of a flying car is that it enables you to get around faster, it's speed is faster then the speed a highway permits, and you don't get stuck in traffic. The disadvantages is obviously the price. They'd be at least a million dollars, depending on the model you would also need a runway to get into the air, and another to land.

Self-Driving cars would easily cut down on traffic related incidents, although there is a possibility that the car could crash itself. As I mentioned earlier, it would allow you to engage in activities while on your way to school/work too. I don't think i'd use it myself though, as I actually do find driving enjoyable, unlike most people, I guess.

Careers in The Automotive Industry

Careers in the Automotive Industry

Some high tech systems in cars today that didn't exist thirty years ago are: Adaptive Cruise Control, Stability and traction control systems and variable valve timing.

Some areas where young people should have skills in if they wish to get a career are math, science, communication and technical skills.

People who get an education in the automotive industry as opposed to other options have a couple advantages. One of the biggest being that it's a two year course, as opposed to a 4, 6 or even 8 year course. Because of those, you live college faster, and with less debt.

They forecast that 237,500 new jobs and a 30% growth rate by the year 2020.

The Automotive industry is immune to the outsourcing of jobs. Unlike most other jobs, it is impossible for automotive service and repair jobs to move overseas.

Some other positions that an automotive technician can do in the automotive industry are: Parts distribution, motorsports, vehicle maintenance, a high school/college professor.

The automotive technician role is considered a portal career as top notch technicians find a lot of high paying employment options.

Video

Some aspects of being an automotive technician that I think I would enjoy would be the satisfaction of fixing a broken car and the fact that i'd be constantly learning more about them.

I found the hybrid car surprising, I knew of electric cars but did not know that there were cars with both an engine and a battery. I also found that device that detected electrical errors in the car intriguing.

Life long learning as an automotive technician is important as the mechanical and technological parts of vehicles are always changing and getting more complex.

Some characteristics that an automotive technician should have are people skills and basic skills in math, mechanics, english and computers.

Certification in the Automotive Industry

NATEF

The Nation Automotive Technicians Education Foundation (NATEF) is a non-profit organization that aims to improve the quality of Automotive Technicians education in school and college. They do this by checking the resources and quality of Automotive training programs and judges them against the standards that a technician needs to be successful.

SGS

The SGS exists to help people in the Automotive Industry, whether they are vehicle manufacturers, traders or a government institution. They manage Supply chains of materials and vehicles, Reduce cost and delivery times, help ensure that your vehicle meets the safety obligations and in general improve road safety and reduce environmental impact.

ASE

The Nation Institute for Automotive Service Excellence (ASE) is another non-profit organization. This one however, aims to improve the quality of vehicle repair and service by testing Automotive professionals. The ASE exists to ensure customers that the person working on their vehicle has extensive knowledge and experience in their trade.  Almost 300,000 technicals hold an ASE certificate

Jobs in the Automotive Industry

The job that I would enjoy the most would obviously be a race car driver. Although I don't think i'll ever get good enough to get the signed up, and even if it is extremely dangerous. Racing cars for a living and making a million dollars annually doesn't sound like it would be that bad a life.

The job I think I would enjoy the least would probably be the car designer. The pay's okay, but I am absolutely godawful at drawing. And even if I was top-tier at drawing there's a high chance that my design would be completely butchered, or I would only design the taillight or another minor section of the vehicle.

Tech for the Sake of Tech?

Tech for the Sake of Tech?

I didn't really find it that surprising that younger people don't really care about the connectivity options. I think our generation would feel the same way, some people would use it, and some people would either wait to use their phone or just use it in the traditional way. I think that it is beneficial, it allows people to use their phones in a less obstructing way, although I don't really imagine myself using it.

It does both, Adaptive cruise control and Blind spot warning enable the driver to spend more time not watching the road, of which the driver could possibly be spending on their phone. These features do however help inexperienced drivers as well.

I've yet to get either my permit or license so I can't really speak for experience. Personally I don't really care for technological features, which is why I prefer older cars. While the technology might be cool to mess around with for a couple hours, I don't really imagine finding most of them practical.

The only technological features that I would like in a car is a stereo, a heater (If you consider those technological features) and normal cruise control. The stereo and heater for obvious reasons and cruise control so I can take my eyes off the speedometer.

I think a feature people would consider useless and unnecessary is cruise control. While it may not be the same today, cruise control was generally disliked when it was first introduced.

The History of the Automobile

Carl Benz-Video

The first automobile was patented back in 1886, or a hundred and 30 years ago.
A patent is the exclusive right to make and sell a certain product. It's given from a government to an inventor after the product is seen as novel and useful. When Carl Benz obtained the patent for his automobile, he called it the motor car. In 1888, his wife Burda drives his car with her 2 oldest sons. A gas station was born from this. The Axial Pivot steering system helped solve a large issue, being able to steer the front two wheels at the same time. This design is still being used today. When Benz & Co and the Diamond Motor Company merged, the new name of the company was Mercedes Benz. The thing Benz experienced that many other inventors do not, is that he lived to see his dream come true.

Henry Ford and the Model T-Video

The Assembly line changed when 3 employees came up to Henry and told him that if the line moved parts to the workers then they'd be able to stay in one place and do what they're good at, without having to walk around the factory. Henry Ford offered his employees a more liveable wage in comparison to other companies at the time. This made his workers stay working there longer then usual. The Model T was a car made for the common man, and the first one costed 2 thousand dollars. The cars price later dropped down to a surprising 365 dollars, which is about $7000 today. As the car became the main method of transportation, it offered freedom of travel. You could go wherever, whenever.

My Video Selections

Vulcanized Rubber

Rubber in it's natural form is unstable, if it gets too hot it melts into a puddle, if it gets too cold it gets rigid.
If you combine natural rubber and sulphur it changes its properties and makes it much more durable.
Rubber is a vital component that's located in many modern products today.
Rubber plantations were created, where rubber was harvested from trees by slaves who were brutally beat. This was especially bad in Africa.

The Ford Edsel

The Ford Edsel was a car made by Henry Ford, name after his only son Edsel
It is regarded as being the biggest flop in the history of the car industry, mostly for how ugly the cars body was.
Edsel, the man the car was based off was the inspiration for one of the supposedly most beautiful cars ever made, the original Lincoln Continental.
One of the most insulted features of the car was it's grill, which was commonly referred to as the "Toilet seat grill"
3 years after the car released, they pulled it from the market. It's estimated that they lost 250-350 million dollars.

Google Drive Apps

ONLINE AUDIO CUTTER- is an app that allows you to cut audio files, to use as samples or ringtones. Its great because there is no loss of quality after its cut out. It also allows you to speed up, change pitch, and slow down audio files.

PIXLR- is a PhotoShop like app, that allows you to retouch and edit pictures for free. This app is super fun to play around with if you know how to use it, which I don't as you can see by the picture below.
